MY DAY AT HOME

Usually, I tried to have in my summer holidays reach with events but this year will be unique because of coronavirus…to be honest I am little upset because I can not meet with my friends, go for a walk, have a picnic with my family and finally can not go abroad for a rest…
So I have to make my day interesting otherwise one can die from boredom. Now my day begins at 11.00 o’clock, at 12.00 I have a shower and prepare myself for having breakfast. After breakfast, i play tennis with my sister or mom for 1 hour. To make it more interesting we are trying to think up some prizes for the winner. For example, if my mom wins I have to do what she wishes, and as usual, all her wishes are somehow connected with learning ) but when I win, I usually want them to let me free for 2 hours and I do what I want and nobody punished me ) So I am doing my best to win every day. After playing tennis we seat in our garden for 30 minutes to have a rest. Since we rarely leave the house because of the quarantine, we have minimal physical activity so after, we are doing some physical exercises to keep our body in good form.
Till lunch time, everyone in our family has free time for himself. As I am interested in a video editing job i am trying to improve my skills in that sphere and i can say that I already have some success, as i have sent my videos to some specialist and they were surprised by my job. After lunch, learning time is coming… Every day i am doing exercises from algebra, geometry, Armenian, and English to improve my knowledge. This month I have added physics as well even though i did not pass it this year.
We have decided to go out of the city every Saturday. This Saturday we went to Tsaghkavanq. I was there the first time and did not know that we have such an amazing place.
After dinner, we prefer to watch a film with all family and eat pop-corn. So this is all that I can tell about my day during quarantine so I hope soon this situation will be stabilized and people can return to normal life.

Review

Nowadays the knowledge of a second foreign language is necessary things. We live in a global community so for communication of non -native people need the knowledge of a language that will be acceptable for everyone. Now the English language is considered to be the most wildly spread one. In abroad it is not difficult to find people with English knowledge, so for the 2nd semester, I have decided to start learning English instead of the Russian language. My Russian language skills are not bad but I understood that knowledge of only the Russian language is not enough to communicate with different native people so I need to learn English as well.
And I can say that with my new teacher ms Hermine it becomes very interesting and funny. We have done a lot of work on improving our English skills and vocabulary, we have made very interesting projects and exercises, we have watch films in English and play different games which helped us to improve our skills.

Trip to Israel

Many people like to travel and I am not an exception. I would like to tell you about my last trip. Last year my family decided to travel to Israel and I was very pleased with that decision. For me, it was great to be on the beach of Death Sea, to admire the ancient walls and pathways of Nazareth and Jerusalem, and at the list to be in Armenian Church in Jerusalem where by the way I was Christened when I was a child. It was really fantastic, I felt something quite powerful, some positive energy which I can not explain by words.

The first place where we went, was the Old City of Jaffa, or Yafo, an old port city with narrow alleyways and buildings resting on top of a hill. Some alleyways were named after 12 signs of Zodiac, so everyone tried to find their own sign and take a photo. But the most impressive thing for me was the Armenian Convent of Saint Nicholas which I found in Old Yafo.

Next place where we went was Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the site where Christians believe Jesus was crucified, buried, and then resurrected to the Western Wall, the holiest site for Jews, where prayers are written on paper and wedged into the cracks of the wall. As you know Armenians have their honorary place in Church of the Holy Sepulcher, so when we went to greet our compatriots, they allowed us to rise on the second flor of church from where there was an excellent view of the Holy Sepulcher.

The next point was the little town Bethlehem. the place where Jesus was born…As you know it is under the control of the PA ( Palestinian Authority) so it requires a tour to pass the checkpoint. The Grotto of the Nativity, where Jesus is said to have been born, is an underground cave in the crypt of the Church of the Nativity underneath the main altar. It is marked by the Altar of Nativity and a 14-pointed silver star with the Latin inscription that translates to “Here Jesus Christ was born to the Virgin Mary”-1717. The grotto is the most popular site in Bethlehem, so expect crowds and long lines. By the way, Armenians have the privilege and can come up and see out of turn.

The last place was we have visited was Nazareth. It is the largest Arab town in Israel, with a mixed population of Christian and Muslim Arabs. It’s also thought to be where Jesus spent his adolescence. The city’s main sightseeing highlight is the Church of the Annunciation. On the floor of the church is a large octagonal opening with a view of the lower level and the older structures below — the Grotto of the Annunciation and the remains of the earliest churches on the site.

I am very pleased with my trip and I believe that every Christian should visit these holy places in one’s life.

MANON LESCAUT

AFTER ABBA PREVO

The last book which I have read during the last period is Manon Lesko after Abba Prevo. I was interested in this book when I watched the film »LAST TEACHER» on TV. I liked the teacher’s approach to the student and when during a lesson he briefly told them about this love story I decided to read it.
The story was about Manon Lesco and Knight de Grieux. The 17-year-old young man fell madly in love with Manon at first sight. She was so young and so beautiful…. The young man, blinded by passion, renounces happiness and willingly indulges in extreme misery. He was sure that his family would never approve his choice but however decided to renounce his bright future and ran away with the Manon to Paris, but soon having returned home earlier than usual, de Grieux learns of Manon’s betrayal with a well-known farmer Mr. de B…who lived in the neighborhood and It was not the first time when he paid a visit to her girl in his absence.
The next day his father’s servants bring him to his father’s house by force where de Grieux tried to forget Manon’s treason and start a new life for a half year. When he returned to Paris to continue training to take the tonsure, he again met Manon. They rented a house in Chaillot and started to live together but soon their house burned down, and during the fire, the chest with their money disappeared. To solve financial problems Manon again decided to »earn» money with old means, only this time she decided to trick her old »victim» but this time she could not deceive him and as a result, they were arrested and sent to prison. From there Manon was sent to America with other 11 girls like her and de Grieux decided to go with her.
At the end of the book, Manon died in the desert. Having buried her, de Grieux laid down on the grave and waited for his death.
The book was easy-read on. It was a nice love story but to be honest I can’t say that I am fascinated by this book. Маybe because I couldn’t understand de Grieux. The betrayal of beloved girl is unforgivable for me but as to say love blinds a person so I can say that I felt sorry for him.

On-line lesson 2

I’m going to tell you about my Aunt Helen’s house. It’s not her main house, that’s in the city. No, this house is by the lake. There was a small town by the lake called Miller’s Ford, but all the people moved away when the fishing and mining stopped about sixty years ago. But the houses stayed, of course. My Aunt Helen uses that house as a vacation home and she goes there for a few weeks every year to relax.

But staying in that house isn’t a relaxing experience. I think the house is haunted! I think there’s a ghost there from many many years ago. Helen says I’m silly and that I’ve got an over-active imagination. But there are many things that happen in that house that cannot be easily explained.

One day, shortly after getting up, I went to find my Aunt Helen to say «good morning» and I heard her talking in a room that she usually never uses. I think it used to be the nursery of the house when Miller’s Ford was a busy town in the 19th Century. I listened at the door and could hear Helen reading something out, or perhaps she was dictating a letter. I couldn’t hear any other person in the room with her so it wasn’t a normal conversation. I didn’t want to disturb my aunt, so I went back downstairs and went to make breakfast in the kitchen, which I ate on the porch that overlooked the lake. It was a beautiful sunny morning. Half an hour later, I heard my aunt’s car arriving. She had been to the local store to buy some bread and milk. I couldn’t believe it!

«What are you looking so shocked for?» she asked me.

«I thought you were in the old nursery, working on your letters, Auntie,» I replied.

«I never go in that room,» she said. «I haven’t been in that room for fifteen years.»

A few other things like that happened over the next few visits I made to that house and I grew to dislike it very much. Then, one day in my local library, I found a story in an old newspaper with the title «The Constant Babysitter». The story was that a baby had died in one of the houses by the lake at Miller’s Ford and the babysitter was blamed, a woman of 37 who was a family friend and had offered to look after the baby. But she spent all her time in the kitchen writing her letters and didn’t know that someone had climbed in the baby’s window and taken her. The baby was never found. The woman killed herself through depression after the baby’s disappearance and local people then said her ghost stayed very close to where the baby was left by the parents — in the nursery.

I never went back to that house, despite my Aunt Helen’s many invitations.

My favourite Armenian.

Charles Aznavour

There are a lot of famous and talented Armenian in the world, but my favourite one whom I like and admire is Charles Aznavour.  I love music and I can say that I’m fond of a lot of music styles. It depends on my mood but there is one singer I can listen to at any time is Charles Aznavour .There is nothing better than switching on my player with the songs of my favorite singer and relaxing on a cozy sofa…

Charles Aznavour with his parents

Charles Aznavour was born on 22 May 1924 . He was a French-Armenian singer, lyricist, actor and diplomat. Aznavour was known for his distinctive tenor voice: clear and ringing in its upper reaches, with gravelly and profound low notes. In a career as a composer, singer and songwriter, spanning over 70 years, he recorded more than approximately 1,200 songs interpreted in 9 languages. Moreover, he wrote or co-wrote more than 1,000 songs for himself and others.

Aznavour was one of France’s most popular and enduring singers. He sold 180 million records during his lifetime and was dubbed France’s  Frank Sinatra, while music critic Stephen Holden  described Aznavour as a «French pop deity». He was also arguably the most famous Armenian of his time. He was recognized as the century’s outstanding performer, with nearly 18% of the total vote, edging out Elvis Presley and  Bob Dylan.Jean Cocteau said: «Before Aznavour, despair was unpopular».

Aznavour sang for presidents, popes and royalty, as well as at humanitarian events.

With his wife Ulla

In spite of the fact that he was born and lived in France, Aznavour was especially reverent about Armenia. He not only dedicated songs to Armenia, but even became the honorary ambassador of UNESCO in Armenia. The square in Yerevan is named after him.

In response to the 1988 Armenian Earthquake , he founded the charitable organization Aznavour for Armenia along with his long-time friend impresario Levon Sayan .

Aznavour in Spitak

He started his last world tour in 2014. On 24 August 2017, Aznavour was awarded the 2,618th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.   Later that year, he and his sister were awarded the Raoul Wallenberg Award for sheltering Jews during World War II. His last concert took place in NHK Hall in Osaka on 19 September 2018.

on the Walk of Fame-на «Аллее славы»

Early life and family.

His father sang in restaurants in France before establishing his own restaurant. Charles’s parents introduced him to performing at an early age, and he dropped out of school at age nine, and took the stage name «Aznavour».

Little Aznavour made his debut on stage at the age of 5, and at 12 he starred in his first film. During World War II, his father volunteered for the front. Charles had to left the school and performed in small Parisian cafes and theaters in occupied Paris in order to feed his family.

»It took 70 years to get a second chance and put on the table diplomas of several universities. This is one of my greatest achievements, I always felt uncomfortable not having a higher education» Aznavour said in an interview.

“I had a good youth, even when I had a hard time, you could always rely on the family and other immigrants,” Aznavour said in an interview.

Film appearances

Aznavour had a long and varied parallel career as an actor, appearing in over 80 films and TV movies. Aznavour starred in the 2002 movie Ararat playing Edward Saroyan, a movie director.

Charles Aznavour in the movie «Ararat»

“You will conquer the world because you knows how to excite,” — this is how General Charles de Gaulle described Aznavour.

Aznavour once said: «I do not dedicate my songs to anyone. Neither Edith Piaf, nor my wife, nor my children. Never … My songs are another part of my life. My personal life is one thing, my work is another.» .

Charles Aznavour and Lisa Minnelli

I admire him because a little boy could conquer the world on his own. He was so strong that despite of the fact that he was growing up in foreign country he found a great will in himself to overcome all difficulties and went to his goal. As we know, the public did not recognize him immediately, he was even told that he had no talent, but Charles did not disappointed and continued to sing.

On the question what was the reason for his success, he answered

»Chance, fate, my lucky star, protection of the Almighty, or maybe something else that I don’t even know about? Ultimately, I managed to get around all the pitfalls and avoid failure. What can I say about my success? In this world, not everything is arranged fairly, so I could not endure talking about it, considering it indecent to brag about my travels and flaunt those advantages that gave me the status of “famous chansonnier”. We will not say that at first I lost my head from what was happening, my “ego” and my claims were so swollen that they took on the shape and size of a Rolls-Royce, but soon enough I realized the futility of such things».

Charls Aznavour and his son Nicolas

I am so proud of him… you can rare meet world well-known man who will be so simple, so wise, so kind, friendly, cleaver , hard-working and modest at the same time.

How to Use ‘Let’ and ‘Make

Let’ can mean ‘allow’ or ‘give permission’:

Թույլ տալ կամ թույլատրել։ «может означать« разрешить »или« дать разрешение »:

  • David’s mother let him use her car.
  • Our boss let us leave early.

We can also use ‘let’ to mean ‘allow’ in the sense of ‘make something possible’:

Мы также можем использовать «let» для обозначения «allow» в смысле «сделать что-то возможным»:

  • This student card lets you book discount flights.
  • You can buy a pass which lets you visit all the art galleries more cheaply.

Let’s + infinitive is often used to make a suggestion:

Let’s + infinitive часто используется, чтобы сделать предложение:

  • Let’s go to the cinema tonight.
  • Let’s get some coffee.

(Although ‘let’s’ is a contraction of ‘let us’, we don’t use ‘let us’ in this situation). We don’t use ‘let’ in the passive.

Make

Subject + make + object + bare infinitive (infinitive without ‘to’)

‘Make’ can mean ‘force someone to do something that he or she doesn’t want to do’:

«Сделать» может означать «заставить кого-то делать то, что он или она не хотят делать»:

  • His mother made him clean his room.
  • The teacher made us study very hard.

It can also be used to mean ’cause someone to do something’ (the thing can be good or bad):

Это также может использоваться для обозначения «заставить кого-то что-то делать» (вещь может быть хорошей или плохой):

  • That film made me cry.
  • My brother often makes me laugh.

If we use ‘make’ in the passive, we use the infinitive with ‘to’ instead of the bare infinitive:

Если мы используем «make» в пассиве, мы используем инфинитив с «to» вместо простого инфинитива:

  • She was made to work on Saturday, even though she hated working at weekends.

We can also use subject + make + object + adjective. This means ’cause the object to be the adjective’ (the adjective can be good or bad):

  • Her story made me really happy.
  • The traffic jam made us late.

Choosing ‘let’ or ‘make’

Remember, we use ‘let’ when we mean ‘allow’. It’s usually something the person wants to do: Помните, что мы используем «let», когда имеем в виду «allow».  Обычно это то, что человек хочет сделать:

  • My boss let me leave early (I wanted to leave early, and the boss gave me permission).

We use ‘make’ when we mean ‘force’ or ’cause’. It’s often something the person doesn’t want to do: Мы используем «make», когда имеем в виду «сила» или «причина».  Часто это то, что человек не хочет делать:

  • My boss made me stay late (I didn’t want to stay, but I had to).

When ‘make’ means ’cause’ it can be something good or bad:

  • My brother made me laugh

Laughing is a good thing, BUT laughing isn’t something I wanted to do that my brother gave me permission for. Instead it’s something that he caused.

We can only use ‘make + object + adjective’. We can’t use ‘let’ in this way.
